Neurological Foundation

You can help by making a donation to the Neurological Foundation of NZ

Donations can be made at any time or on a regular basis directly to the Neurological Foundation.

Bequests and donations are the Neurological Foundation's main source of funds - the Neurological Foundation is a totally community-based organisation, receiving no Government funding whatsoever (the Government has its own research organisation, the Health Research Council, with whom we work closely).

Tax Rebates

If you had taxable income you can make a separate claim for a rebate on a rebate claim form (IR 526) if you made a donation of $5 or more to the Neurological Foundation. The maximum amount you can claim is $1,890 (Note: this is an increase from the $1,500 per person for last year). Couples can combine their donations so that the donor with the higher rate of tax can claim up to $3,780 for the tax year.

Rebates can be claimed by individuals (not companies, trusts or partnerships) who:

  • earned taxable income during the period being claimed for, and
  • were resident in New Zealand at any time during the tax year.

  • Claiming rebates

If you claimed a rebate last year, the IRD will automatically send you a rebate claim form (it should have arrived in April). Otherwise, you can complete the IR526 form, print and sign it, attach your receipts and post it in. Alternatively you can order one by calling INFOexpress on 0800 257 773 and the IRD will post one to you in 8 working days. Remember to have your IRD number handy.

    Completing the claim form

The claims process is straightforward. Fill in the form and the IRD will do the calculations required. You will need to tell them the number of a bank account so they can direct credit your refund into it. If you have claimed in the past, the rebate claim form the IRD sends you will already have a bank account number printed on it. If this number has changed, please advise them on the claim form in the space provided. You now have up to eight years to file your claim for your donations. The IRD will notify you and let you know the amount that has been deposited into your bank account once your claim has been processed.

Claims must be supported by receipts which is why we endeavour to return receipts to our supporters as quickly as possible. Receipts are either hand-written on an official receipt form, printed with the Neurological Foundation logo and address/GST details, or printed by a computer and showing the same detail.
