Grants and careers
The Neurological Foundation accepts applications for large and small projects, post-doctoral and clinical fellowships, conference and training course grants, doctoral scholarships and summer studentships.
There are two funding rounds per year for large and small projects, early-career fellowships and conference and training course grants. There is one round per year for doctoral scholarships, senior fellowships and summer studentships. Travel grant applications can also be submitted by those who have an eligible project grant or fellowship.
The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and Personal Awards Committee (PAC) meet in June and November each year to consider applications for funding, with the exception of summer studentships and travel grants, which are decided via e-motion. The recommendations of the committees are presented to the Neurological Foundation Council, and outcomes are announced in early July and December.
All applications must be submitted by the appropriate research institution by the deadline dates specified.

Programme grants
These grants are intended to support a programme of research undertaken by a multidisciplinary team based in New Zealand. The outcomes must increase our understanding of the causes, diagnosis, prevention or treatment of diseases and disorders of the nervous systems. The programme should already be well established and positioned to progress to the next level.

Platform grants
These grants are intended to support the expansion of a platform of national and international relevance, based in New Zealand, that provides nationwide access to resources enabling research into neurological conditions. The platform should already be well established and positioned to progress to the next level.

Project grant
This is the main avenue by which the Neurological Foundation sponsors research. Applicants can be scientifically or medically qualified, and the research can be clinical or biomedical.

Small project grant
These grants are intended to encourage clinicians and scientists to undertake small-scale or pilot studies that may lead to a larger project.

Education and training events grant
Education and Training Grants are intended to support the development of educational resources or events such seminars, conferences, and training courses with an educational or research focus. These can be applied for at any time.

Travel grant
These grants are intended to support recipients of eligible project, scholarship or fellowship funding from the Foundation to travel for conferences, meetings, and training.
Travel grants can be applied for at any time, and up to two years after the parent grant has ended. -
VJ Chapman Fellowship
These fellowships are intended to support medical graduates pursuing a career in academic neurology, neurosurgery, or neuropathology.

O’Brien Clinical Fellowship
These fellowships are intended to support non-medical health professionals pursuing a career in clinical research.

Philip Wrightson Fellowship
These fellowships are intended to provide personal support for outstanding postdoctoral research fellows undertaking research at institutions outside New Zealand.

Senior clinical research fellowship
These fellowships are intended to provide personal support to practising clinicians carrying out clinical research.

Senior research fellowship
These fellowships are intended to provide personal support to outstanding post-doctoral fellows establishing themselves as independent researchers.

First fellowship
These fellowships are intended to provide personal support for outstanding early career researchers completing their first post-doctoral fellowship under the close mentorship of an academic with a continuing position.

Dawn fellowship
These fellowships are intended to provide personal support to scientists or clinicians carrying out research into Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, peripheral neuropathy, Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Doctoral scholarship
These scholarships are intended to provide personal support for students undertaking a PhD in basic or clinical neuroscience.

Neurology postgraduate scholarship
These scholarships are intended to provide personal support to outstanding neurology trainees or neurologists early in their careers so they can be trained to conduct research that is internationally competitive, and develop a capacity for original independent research. The scholarships are funded collaboratively by the Neurological Foundation, the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN), and the Neurological Association of New Zealand (NANZ).

These studentships are intended to provide personal support for students wishing to gain research skills and experience.
